Let’s Get Back To The Basics

To those of you who want to be the best writer you can be, here are some basics of writing. I know this maybe dated information but without the full understanding of writing, you cannot progress. Learning the basics can help create a foundation for the writing world. You may surprise yourself after taking a writing class that the talent is natural, but difficulty in setting up description can take a person out of the reading very rapidly. It can destroy a potential fan. To even dream of being accepting in the writing world you need to know the basics.

The most understandable one is plot. It deals with the events that happen in the story, in an order of some kind. It does not have to be in sequential order, but it does need to be understandable. The plot takes the reader through all the appealing points, metaphorically connecting the dots, and directing the reader from beginning to end. Plot consists of five main aspects: the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. To ensure that the short story or novel will be comprehensive and logical, it needs to follow that design.

Setting is one of the factors that people do not establish well or they over look. Setting is the time and location of the story. That could be as effortless as giving a town and a year to something more difficult as building descriptions and weather. The amount of detail that is in setting can be really tiny or really big. By making the setting more alive or practical, the more forceful the reading can become. To set the aura of the piece there needs to be a good setting. It also affects the quality, tone, and atmosphere.

Another major basic aspect of writing is characters. There would be nothing to move the story along without the characters. To make the experience more relatable the characters need to be as realistic as possible. The author manipulates the characters in order to push the story along, hopefully gaining a better understanding of the situation. In having a good character, the traits make the character comprehensible, relevant, and authentic whether or not they are on the side of “good” or “evil”.

In conclusion without the basic aspects of writing, the story fails. In some cases without these, the story might not even be considered complete. The amount of time used to develop these three aspects will vary, paying more attention to some over others, however being aware of how much care is given to the points can enhance your writing.
